This is a unique opportunity for final year Bachelor of Social Work students to undertake  a 3 month clinical placement in Odisha, India. Students undertake 500 hours of professional and practical supervised learning experience in programs with agencies engaged with the Urban Micro Business Centre. Students are placed under the auspice of Centurion University of Technology, Odisha, India, and supervised under  Dr. Supriya Pattanayak (Adj. Prof. Social Work, RMIT). This is a unique experience for western social work related  to the recontextualisation of practice as students are immersed in the rural village life, residing with staff in the organisations they have been placed in or on one of the campuses of Centurion University. 

RMIT has been sending small groups of final year Bachelor of Social Work students to undertake field education in Odisha, India since 2002 and in 2014 students presented a paper at the International Social Work Conference in Kerala, critically reflecting upon the mutual benefits of undertaking overseas field education in this highly contrasting, challenging and rewarding context. 

 
Eligibility:
Only students who are in their final year of a Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work and approved for this program should register.

Academic Credit:
  • Approved students will enrol in:
    • HWSS2221 Social Work Field Education B (24 credit points)
    • HWSS2219 Field Education Integrated Learning 2 (12 credit points)
    • HWSS2207 Social Work Field Education 2 (24 credit points)
Program Cost:
The approximate cost for this program is AU$7,000.
This cost includes the following:
  • Accommodation
  • Fares to and from Bhubaneswar, Odisha
  • Travel within India
  • Insurance and Immunisations
  • Miscellaneous Expenses

  • Travel Insurance (if applicable)
Travel Insurance:
Students on approved overseas activities receive complimentary travel insurance (policy number: 41443), although you may require additional cover depending on your circumstances.

Registration process:
  • Students who have been approved for this program will be required to register via Mobi using the "Apply Now" button above by 25 May 2018.
  • Students will need to complete the following Questionnaires:
    1. General questionnaire- Attach Passport copy
    2. Short-term programs questionnaire- Include personal statement outlining why you are interested in participating in this program.
  • Students will receive an official acceptance after the deadline and instructions on how to receive their travel grant and pre-departure requirements.
Funding:
For Spring 2018, there are 3 x $7,000 New Colombo Plan Mobility Grants available to Australian citizens enrolled in a bachelor/bachelor honours program.
